One of the true "divas" of Cuban music, Lourdes Torres has been a performer for almost half a century. She composes and performs her own music, much with a strong feminist bent. Recorded live at the famous Dos Gardenias Nightclub , she spoke to producer Illiana Batista Suarez in her home in Central Havana . Filmed on location in Cuba in digital video, Musica Femenina II highlights more than 10 groups and individual performances by some of the "divas" of Cuban music, like Lourdes, and also gives a rarely seen look into their private lives. Che Guevara receives Jean Paul Sartre in Cuba
Che Guevara receives Jean Paul Sartre in Cuba
With English Subtitles. It was the dawn of the Cuban revolution. Hassan Abbasi, Iranian political science professor tells the story of his young years. Apologies for the minor spelling in Sartre. Jean-Paul Charles Aymard Sartre (French pronunciation: [saʁtʁ], English: /ˈsɑrtrə/; 21 June 1905 -- 15 April 1980) was a French existentialist philosopher, playwright, novelist, screenwriter, political activist, biographer, and literary critic. He was one of the leading figures in 20th century French philosophy, existentialism, and Marxism, and his work continues to influence fields such as Marxist philosophy, sociology, critical theory and literary studies. Sartre was also noted for his long polyamorous relationship with the feminist author and social theorist, Simone de Beauvoir. He was awarded the 1964 Nobel Prize in Literature but refused the honour. Ernesto "Che" Guevara (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈtʃe geˈβaɾa];[5] June 14,[1] 1928 -- October 9, 1967), commonly known as El Che or simply Che, was an Argentine Marxist revolutionary, physician, author, intellectual, guerrilla leader, diplomat and military theorist. A major figure of the Cuban Revolution, since his death, Guevara's stylized visage has become a ubiquitous countercultural symbol and global insignia within popular culture.[6] As a medical student, Guevara traveled throughout Latin America and was transformed by the endemic poverty he witnessed.[7] His experiences and observations during these trips led him to ...

Cuban Hip Hop: Guerrilla Radio - Las Krudas
A clip from the documentary, "Guerrilla Radio: The Hip-Hop Struggle Under Castro" Las Krudas: Three lesbian rappers who are equal parts Missy Elliot, Biggie Smalls and Lil Kim. Tough, hard-core feministas who attack Cuban machismo on practically every song. They're street dancers in Havana's tourist traps by day and renegade hip-hop artists by night, giving voice to maids, tired mothers, and abused wives.

Krudas clip
Krudas clip
'Krudas' explores the lives and work of a Cuban lesbian couple who are hip hop singers and performers. The duo Krudas addresses issues such as women's liberation, lesbian rights, female solidarity and racism. Their work is deeply engaged with feminism and strong ties to their African roots. Their songs represent an effort to upset semantics and syntax. Krudas conceive language itself as the root of female exclusion and thus summons men to engage in dialogue refusing to engage in any hierarchical structures. Krudas emphasize the use of the first person - one will hear the repetition of the first person "yo" (I) often followed by their own names to further personalize their discourse. Krudas' first person extends beyond mere autobiographical narrative; their "I" is an attempt to formulate a double subjectivity, what philosopher Luce Irigaray calls "I-she" ("Je-elle") and "I-he" ("Je-"lui"). In addition to leading the hip hop duo and the street performance group Tropazancos, Krudas have also organized a network of female hip hop artists, Omega, to unite women in the hip hop and alternative music scenes. Omega's goal is to join forces in order to generate larger projects, including all-female collective performances, recordings, and workshops. Dir. Opie Boero Imwinkelried 2006 29 min.
